This is the view as you head up to the temple, the grave of Hayataro, the dog who protected the village against an evil spirit, is located to the left (as you face it) of the temple in the woods. The large, obnoxious sign in black and red is a kind reminder that smoking is not allowed on the grounds of the temple.
