hate
The word "hate" is one of the most powerful words in the English language. It invokes images of cruelty, of brutality, torture, pain, and suffering. Webster's Unabridged defines it as: "1 a : intense hostility toward an object (as an individual) that has frustrated the release of an inner tension (as of a biological nature)" and "b : an habitual emotional attitude in which distaste is coupled with sustained ill will ". Distaste coupled with sustained ill will? Habitual?

Yet, despite the intent of the word, it's amazing how authors can take such a powerful word and effectively commute the word "hate" to be more trivial like this: "so pretty she hated to get glasses when she needed them -- John Steinbeck."
