Photographic Happenstance
Expressing the arbritary nature of life through incidental images of people, places, and things…

Here's a picture of the glass sculptures in between the west and east buildings of the National Gallery of Art. There was an available light issue that Sunday morning - I thought everything would be fine, my light meter gave me 1/60 shutter speed at f8.0, but oddly enough, it was nowhere near what the camera was measuring. I remember reading about how digital cameras have a tendency to misread light, but I didn't think that was the case with the D200, which was supposed to be dead on. I was a bit perplexed until I realized that I had the light meter set at ISO 400, duh! Crank that baby down to ISO 100 and I got 1/30 at f8.0, which combined with cold weather and the fact that I was carrying a backpack with my backup body, battery, and flash, led to a potentially fuzzy shot. I ended up taking it at 1/60 at f6.3 and I thought the exposure came out alright (check the EXIF for the image). I've been in the DC Metro area for over (barely) 7 years now and I've never been to the National Gallery of Art. I suppose it's time we make a trip out there. Isn't it amazing how negligent you can be if you "live" in a place? Visitors from out of town have probably seen much more of this wonderful city than I have over a span of 7 years. It was like that in Hawaii as well - we lived there for almost 4 years and had neighbors who were born and raised there and never left Oahu...
